Our Superstar Son, Aiden

It’s a cool Friday morning here in San Jose and I am feeling sentimental - like I should give a tribute, a little shout-out to my special 2 year 27 month baby boy. Aiden has been growing up so fast and it seems even more realistic as some of our friends are having new babies, he’s just not that small anymore. He’s the happiest child that parents could ask for and he brings us the type of joy that we can’t receive from anyone or anything else in the world. For those of you blog-followers who have had the opportunity to spend time with him recently, you know that Aiden loves to talk. He’s a big communicator and he’s always trying to let us know what’s going on. Aiden says the cutest things like, “how you doin’ Mommy? You good? I’m good.” Or he’ll say, “Aiden’s happy, you happy?” He tells us that he loves us and makes sure that we can hear him, so he’ll repeat it over and over again.

Aiden really communicates so well, it amazes us. Last night I told him that he could watch his movie (Kung Fu Panda) for 4 more minutes before going to bed. About a minute later Craig said to him something about going to bed and Aiden’s response was, “No Daddy, I have 3 minutes.” We try not to act amazed during moments like this, but we smile and later laugh about it together. It’s simply astounding what he picks up on so quickly. I remember that at a very young age, he was able to recognize an octagon when we held up a stop sign toy. I couldn’t understand where he would store this type of information when he’s already dealing with numbers, letters and everything else going on in a kid’s head.

Aiden has been potty training for some time now and I feel confident that he’s about 80% potty trained. He is so proud of himself and frequently tells us that he’s so proud of us as well. Typically he’ll use the potty, then after he’s done and has washed his hands, he will announce that he has gone on the potty to whoever is around (including the dogs) and say something like, “I’m so proud of you Mommy, I want a sticker and car.” Add 14 years to this conversation and it would be very different. We had started potty training with Matchbox cars and it worked very well, but now we have too many Matchbox cars to keep track of. I think Craig found 4 under the dishwasher yesterday.

Aiden really loves to play sports, he tries to hit the baseball with the bat, slam dunk a basketball, kick the soccer ball and spike a football. We frequently hear, “you ready Mommy?” Then he’ll throw the ball and try to play catch with us, I hope this means that he has good coordination. He seems very satisfied in the activities that he chooses to participate in. He laughs like he’s beaming with happiness when he has success with things. He’s amazingly satisfied so frequently and so easily.

I remember when he was first born, many people said that he seemed like he was so satisfied and happy. He was very content, that is the word many people used. I think he’s still that way, content with his happy life and family. He loves to spend time with Nana and Papa (Sue and Ken) and Grandma and Grandpa (Carmel and Ed). He also gets to see Uncle Mike all the time, he loves to hang out with Uncle Mike.

Recently Grandma and Grandpa took us to see Thomas the Train up in Felton. It was a big event where one of the train engines at Roaring Camp Railroads was converted to look like Thomas the Train. Aiden was so excited to see Thomas that he screamed, “Thomas the Train, look Thomas the Train, I’m so proud of you Mommy!!!” He put his hands on my cheeks, kissed me and gave me a hug. It was the cutest thing. We went inside this big building where all of the Thomas the Train schwag was – hats, shirts, toys, games, etc. You could purchase Thomas the Train items there that were specific to “A Day Out With Thomas,” which is what the event was called. My mom said to Aiden, “would you like a hat or a shirt?” Aiden’s response was, “I want a toy Grandma.” For some reason, this was such a cute thing to me – he is growing up so fast. He was standing there holding onto my mom’s hand looking up at her with a huge smile on his face. He was wearing a cute little zip-up sweatshirt with USA on the front, corduroy pants and his new Puma tennis shoes. Just a little person who can speak his mind. He had never said something like that before, it made me realize just how fast he’s really growing up.

Aiden loves to sing, he can sing the ABC’s – he gets better every day. His favorite song is “5 Little Monkeys,” this one goes on and on about monkeys jumping on a bed, falling off and bumping their head, calling the DR and the DR says, no more monkeys jumping on the bed… Then they’re 4, 3, 2, 1, no little monkeys jumping on the bed. He sings that one over and over, even when he’s trying to fall asleep at night.

This week we finally got Aiden to stop using the pacifier – for a kid who has been so advanced with talking and potty training, he was completely addicted to his pacifier. We told him that we gave all of his pacifiers to a little baby boy who needed them. He looked at us with big eyes and said, “a baby boy needs my pacifiers?” He’s asked for the pacifiers only a couple more times since then and every time we ask him where they are, he responds by saying, “little baby has my pacifiers.” It’s pretty amazing. He has slept well without them, we’re glad that he’s adjusted so well.

I’ve thought that since we entered into the world of parenthood, there has been no way to express the joy and happiness that Aiden brings us. We share stories about him, talk about his growth and development, but there is no way to share the feeling that I get when he hugs me, tells me he loves me, kisses me and wraps me in love. It’s truly amazing how pure his love is, I never want that to change. He’s so special.
